The Jaguar

The jaguar belongs to the cat family. It is one of the four big (roaring) cats along wits the lion, the tiger and the leopard. Because it has spots, a jaguar is often mistaken for a leopard.  However, a jaguar has larger rosette markings, a stronger body and a sometimes look like the print of an animal paw (see the picture).

The jaguar is brownish-yellow in color and has sports on the head, neck and legs and rosettes on other parts of its body. It can weigh up to 100 kilograms. Its jaw is s powerful that it can easily crush the skull of its prey.

Jaguars live in a variety of locations. The tropical rainforests and wet grasslands of Central and South America form the habitat of the jaguar. It was once found in large numbers in the Amazon rain forests.

Like the tiger, the jaguar likes to swim or just stay in the water on hot days. For this reason, it lives in places with plenty of water from a river or a lake.
